Historical Facts and events in Ghana

Geography

Ghana lies in West Africa. Borders to the East with Togo, to the South with the Atlantic Ocean to the West with Ivory Coast and to the North with Burkina Faso.

Events in Ghanas History:

1482 : The Portuguise built the first Port at Elmina

1661 : The Danish main Fort Christiansborg was renovated and enlarged.

1692 : The beginning of Osei Tutu's reign in Ashanti and the start of the Ashanti dynasty.

1807 : The first of many wars between the Ashantis and the British. The same year, slavery was abolished by the Brittish.

1821 : The British government took over power in the Gold Coast.

1850 : The Danish flag flew for the last time, 30th. march over their possessions in the Gold Coast.

1874 : The Gold Coast was officially declared a Brittish Colony.

1877 : Accra became the capital of the colony.

1901 : Ashanti became a British colony.

1957 : The Gold Coast became independent, and the name changed to Ghana.

1960 : Ghana became a republic with Dr. Nkrumah as president.


1962 : Ghana becomes a one-party state. Only Nkrumahs party is allowed.

1966 : Nkrumah is removed from power by the military.

1969 : Democratic government. New constitution.

1972 : Military coup

1979 : Rawlings takes over power. He however, relinquishes power later to a civilian government under president Limann.

1981 : Rawlings takes power again through military coup.

1983 : The return of more than i million Ghanaians, who had been expelled from Nigeria.

1984 : Creation of a National public tribunal to hear and determine appeals in cases of political and economic nature.

1992 : Jerry Rawlings elected president Nov. 3 in Natonal Presidential election.

1996 : Jerry Rawlings re-elected president for second and last term.

2001 :Kufour is sworn in as the new president in January 7.

2009 : Prof. John Atta Mills is sworn in as Ghana's new president following a cliff-hanger election victory.

Languages

One can count, on the basis of tribes, 75 different languages. Not many of these are common. The important languages widely spoken are: Akan, Ga-Adangbe, Ewe, Hausa, Mole-Dagbani and Gurma. The official language is English.
