Festival

Throughout Ghana every town and village becomes animated with excitement at festival time. This goes with the proverbial hospitality of the Ghanaian at its best; visitors are often welcomed into homes to share drinks and meals and to join in street celebrations. Parades take place to the sound of drums and traditional horns. Each festival commemorates an event like victory at war, the harvest, a chief enstoolment or funeral. The festival calendar is very long.

The Ga- Adangmes celebrate Homowo, which literally means "hooting or jeering at hunger" This takes place once a year through July, August, and early September. The ritual food kpekple or kpokpoi is prepared from white corn meal steamed and pounded in an African morter and mixed with palm oil, salt and a little mashed okra. It is served with palm soup prepared with smoked fish. At the end of this celebration, Ga chiefs parade to the sound of drums and horns through the streets of Accra.
